Ethereum Drops 6.6%: Can the $2,223 Daily Support Hold?
Last saved:
At a glance
- Coinbase ETH-USD spot traded at $2,263.11 at 16:56:59 UTC on 5 November, 6.57% below Wednesday's completed close.
- The current UTC candle remains open; its $2,233.60 low and $2,434.50 high are provisional.
- A daily close above $2,304.62–$2,314.92 followed by a holding retest supports stabilisation.
- A close below $2,223.00 followed by a failed reclaim favours continuation towards the next completed-session reference at $2,170.03.

Ethereum gave back most of Wednesday's rebound as ETH-USD spot traded at $2,263.11 at 16:56:59 UTC on 5 November on Coinbase. That was 6.57% below the completed 4 November close of $2,422.27. Yahoo's ETH-USD feed showed $2,263.08 four seconds earlier, providing a close cross-check.
The current UTC daily candle remains open. The quote is a timestamped public spot-market observation—not a guaranteed live or executable price—and it should not be confused with an ETH futures contract or an exchange-traded product.
Executive summary
- Instrument: Coinbase ETH-USD spot, quoted in US dollars per ether.
- ETH was $2,263.11 at 16:56:59 UTC, down 6.57% from Wednesday's completed $2,422.27 close.
- Today's open candle had traded between $2,233.60 and $2,434.50 at the observation time.
- The completed-session support cluster is $2,223.00–$2,245.34; the first recovery zone is $2,304.62–$2,314.92.
- A daily close above the recovery zone followed by a holding retest would support stabilisation. A close below $2,223.00 followed by a failed reclaim would favour continuation towards the next completed-session reference at $2,170.03.
What the price action says
Wednesday's completed candle opened at $2,271.72, reached $2,448.26 and closed at $2,422.27. Thursday then opened at $2,422.25, briefly traded as high as $2,434.50 and fell to $2,233.60 before the 16:56:59 UTC snapshot.
The reversal is large, but it does not by itself reveal a cause. We found no distinct new Ethereum Foundation or regulator announcement that reliably explains the decline. The Ethereum Foundation archive showed its latest November post on 3 November, while the official Glamsterdam roadmap page still described mainnet timing as expected in Q4 2026 with no confirmed date. Those items are context, not evidence that protocol news caused today's move.
Crypto trades continuously across venues, so daily boundaries and exchange-specific liquidity matter. Coinbase's UTC candle can differ slightly from another exchange's candle. The plan below therefore uses levels from completed Coinbase sessions and treats today's high and low as provisional.
Evidence map
The nearest completed-session support comes from several lows:
- 4 November: $2,223.00;
- 3 November: $2,236.92;
- 2 November: $2,233.50;
- 1 November: $2,245.34; and
- 31 October: $2,233.08.
Together they form a $2,223.00–$2,245.34 decision area rather than one exact line. The first completed-session resistance references are the 3 November high at $2,304.62 and the 2 November high at $2,314.92. Above them, Wednesday's $2,422.27 close and $2,448.26 high form the next reference band.
Daily-timeframe trading plan
Bullish stabilisation scenario
A rebound becomes more credible if ETH produces a UTC daily close above $2,304.62–$2,314.92 and later holds that band on a retest. That sequence would show that buyers have regained the highs of the two sessions preceding Wednesday's breakout.
If confirmed, $2,422.27–$2,448.26 is the next evidence zone, covering Wednesday's close and high. It is a reference area, not a promised target. The bullish stabilisation thesis weakens if price closes above $2,314.92 but then loses the band on the next retest. It is invalidated for this setup by a confirmed close below $2,223.00.
Bearish continuation scenario
A UTC daily close below $2,223.00, followed by a failed reclaim of $2,223.00–$2,245.34, would indicate that the multi-session floor has broken. The next completed-session reference is the 30 October low at $2,170.03.
That lower level should not be treated as guaranteed support. Fast crypto markets can trade through visible lows, especially when leverage is being reduced. The bearish setup weakens if ETH recovers $2,245.34 and is invalidated by a daily close and holding retest above $2,314.92.
Neutral scenario
If ETH closes within $2,223.00–$2,314.92, the market remains inside a broad decision range. Traders can wait for a completed close rather than chase an intraday move. Wednesday's rally and Thursday's reversal demonstrate why an unfinished daily candle can give a false impression of trend confirmation. Our previous Ethereum plan treated Wednesday's high as provisional for the same reason.
The Money Man View
Analysis horizon: the next one to three UTC daily closes. The central question is whether the $2,223.00–$2,245.34 floor can absorb a second test after Wednesday's expansion. ETH was still above the lowest boundary at the snapshot, but the day was incomplete and the market had already travelled through a wide range.
Our base case is continued two-way volatility inside $2,223.00–$2,314.92 until a daily close supplies better evidence. A bullish alternative requires recovery and acceptance above $2,314.92. A bearish alternative requires a close below $2,223.00 and a failed reclaim—not merely a brief wick.
The framework changes if an official protocol announcement, material exchange incident, regulatory action or verified liquidity event creates a new catalyst. The next checkpoints are the 5 November UTC close, the response around the completed-session support cluster, official Ethereum upgrade notices and any venue-specific operational update.
Risk controls
ETH trades around the clock and can move sharply while traditional markets are closed. Stops may fill below their trigger during a fast move; leverage and liquidation can amplify losses. Prices can differ across venues, and a single exchange candle does not represent the entire market.
Before sizing a position, define the invalidation level and calculate risk from the actual entry-to-stop distance. Reduce size if the stop must sit beyond a wide daily range. The MAE and MFE tutorial offers a structured way to review whether stops and exits match observed trade behaviour.
