Gold futures have slipped below $4,000 and last Friday’s low, extending the damage to the recovery discussed in our previous report. The important daily question is whether that older low can be reclaimed before the session ends, or becomes resistance on a later retest.
December 2026 COMEX gold futures, GCZ26, were $3,977.10 per troy ounce at 07:52:07 UTC on 30 October 2026 — 13:52:07 in Bangladesh and 07:52:07 GMT in London. This delayed Yahoo Finance contract quote was approximately 1.35% below Thursday’s daily close. It is a futures price in US dollars, not spot XAU/USD, a Bangladesh jewellery rate or a live executable quote.
Yesterday’s support test has deteriorated
Our 29 October gold plan identified $4,036.90 as the bearish closing boundary. Thursday’s daily close was $4,031.40, approximately 0.50% below Wednesday’s close, meeting that closing condition. A subsequent failed reclaim was a separate requirement, so the close alone is not a claim that the full trade sequence occurred.
Friday’s delayed snapshot is below Thursday’s $4,016.30 low and the 23 October low of $3,989.10. The earlier bullish repair condition above $4,050.20 did not occur on Thursday’s close. These are reviews of stated scenarios, not executed trades or returns.

Source: GCZ26 daily history. “Close” means the provider’s daily field, not an independently verified official exchange settlement. The sampled Friday high was $4,038.20. Today’s extremes can change. The generic GC=F series was close to the same price, but it uses the same provider and is not independent confirmation; all levels in this plan use the named December contract.
The next verified catalyst is US labour-cost data
Yesterday’s BEA release reported September PCE inflation of 0.5% month on month and 3.6% year on year. Excluding food and energy, the readings were 0.3% and 3.1%. These results are already public, not upcoming forecasts.
The BLS calendar schedules the third-quarter Employment Cost Index for 30 October at 08:30 US Eastern time, equivalent to 12:30 UTC / 12:30 GMT in London / 18:30 Bangladesh time. The release was still ahead at the quoted gold snapshot. This article assumes neither its result nor a consensus estimate.
Our interpretation: wage-cost evidence can change expectations for inflation and interest rates. Higher real yields can raise the opportunity cost of holding gold, while a stronger dollar can make it more expensive in other currencies. Neither relationship is automatic. We have not established that one of these factors caused the entire morning decline; the reaction after the release needs to be observed.
The Money Man View: next one to three daily sessions
Base case — a broken range needs repair. Below $3,989.10, gold is underneath a previously completed-session low. The round $4,000 figure is useful shorthand, not proof of support. Friday’s close will determine whether the current breach persists on a completed daily basis.
Bullish repair. A daily close back above $3,989.10, followed by a later retest that holds, would weaken the immediate breakdown. $4,001.60 and $4,016.30 are the next historical checkpoints overhead. A further reclaim of $4,036.90 would repair more of the earlier structure. A later close below the reclaimed $3,989.10 boundary would weaken the initial bullish scenario. These checkpoints are not promised targets.
Bearish continuation. A daily close below $3,989.10, followed by a failed reclaim, would strengthen the downside case. $3,976.80 is only today’s provisional low, not established support. The reviewed one-month December-contract series contains no lower completed-session low; this plan therefore does not invent a lower technical target. A sustained recovery above $3,989.10 would weaken this immediate bearish interpretation.
Wait condition. Repeated crossings of the boundary around the US release would leave the setup unsettled. A daily trader can wait for the same contract’s completed bar and reassess the actual distance to invalidation. A narrow stop does not prevent slippage, and a large candle does not justify increasing exposure to recover earlier losses.
Keep December futures separate from spot, CFDs, ETFs and physical bullion; our futures basis guide explains why their prices differ. Check contract size, margin and execution costs before translating a price move into money at risk. Longer-term investors should distinguish this short-term breakdown from their portfolio’s concentration and purpose for holding gold.
Next checkpoint: today’s Employment Cost Index, then Friday’s completed December-contract daily bar. This article’s prices do not update automatically.
