Nikkei Breaks 63,000 as Nasdaq Futures Slide and Brent Rises Above $111

The Asian technology sell-off extended after midday, taking Japan's Nikkei 225 below 63,000 and pushing Nasdaq 100 futures towards 29,500. Hong Kong's afternoon session reopened below 22,900 at its low, while December Brent crude moved above $111 and gold broke below $4,100.

These are meaningful changes from our midday Asia market update. The Nikkei has now broken the 63,067–63,000 support area, Hang Seng has made a fresh afternoon low, and both Nasdaq futures and gold have extended through the nearest levels identified one hour earlier.

Live snapshot: Indicative prices sampled between 05:43 and 06:05 UTC on 22 October 2026 (06:43–07:05 UK time; 11:43–12:05 Bangladesh time). Asian cash markets were open; US indices and commodities were futures. Quotes may be delayed and can change rapidly.

Nikkei loses 63,000 as SoftBank falls further

Nikkei 225 traded near 62,976, approximately 2.55% below Wednesday's 64,621.24 close, after reaching an observed low near 62,921. The index has therefore broken both the earlier 63,208 support and the broader 63,067–63,000 area.

SoftBank Group traded around 4,314 yen, down approximately 6.7%, after touching 4,305. The Associated Press had already reported heavy losses in Tokyo's large technology names, including SoftBank, Tokyo Electron and Advantest. The deeper afternoon move confirms that technology exposure remains the main pressure point rather than a small index-level fluctuation.

For the daily timeframe, acceptance below 63,000 would expose the next reference around 62,650, followed by the wider 62,300–62,400 area. A recovery through 63,208 would be the first evidence of a failed breakdown; 63,503 remains the stronger invalidation level.

KOSPI holds just above its next support

South Korea's KOSPI traded near 5,505, down approximately 4.03%, with an observed low near 5,502. The index is now testing the upper part of the 5,493–5,525 support zone but has not decisively broken it.

SK Hynix was near 1,211,000 won, down about 6.4%, after touching 1,204,000. Samsung Electronics traded around 213,500 won, down about 4.5%. This leaves the Korean market vulnerable, but the 5,493 level still separates a support test from a confirmed new breakdown.

If KOSPI closes below 5,493, the next daily reference is near 5,451. A move back through 5,553 would reduce immediate pressure, while 5,590 would provide stronger evidence that the latest leg lower is failing.

Hang Seng makes a fresh low after the break

Hang Seng reopened for its afternoon session and reached approximately 22,897, later trading near 22,917. That is about 3.11% below the verified 23,651.87 previous close.

The fresh low matters because the morning's sub-23,000 move did not attract enough demand to produce an immediate recovery. The first stabilisation signal would be a return above 23,000. A sustained reclaim of 23,221 would invalidate the immediate breakdown thesis. Below 22,897, traders should watch the 22,750–22,800 area rather than assuming that a round number alone will stop the move.

Nasdaq futures approach 29,500

Nasdaq 100 futures traded near 29,515, approximately 1.64% below the 30,007 reference, after reaching an observed low around 29,507. S&P 500 futures were near 7,733, down about 0.87%, while Dow futures were around 52,828, down about 0.44%.

Nasdaq's larger loss keeps the decline concentrated in growth and technology exposure. The contract has broken 29,583 but has not yet reached the broader 29,392–29,226 support area. A rebound above 29,583 would be an early stabilisation sign. The stronger recovery test remains 29,675–29,731.

The Associated Press linked the regional technology pressure to concern that expensive borrowing may slow data-centre construction. That is a plausible market narrative, but it should not be treated as a single proven cause. Position reduction after a strong rebound, earnings reactions, the Bank of Korea's firm inflation outlook and rising energy prices all fit the wider setup.

Brent clears $111 as gold breaks $4,100

December Brent futures traded near $111.43, approximately 2.40% above the $108.82 previous reference, with an observed high near $111.44. December WTI was near $99.27, up about 2.18%.

Brent has crossed the psychological $111 level but remains below the recent $111.97 high. A break through $111.97 would strengthen the energy-cost and inflation signal. A return below $110.59, the observed session low, would weaken the immediate breakout.

Gold futures traded near $4,089 per troy ounce, down about 1.47%, after reaching roughly $4,082. The break below both $4,100 and the earlier $4,095 support shows that gold is not currently offsetting the equity decline. The next reference is around $4,065–$4,075. A recovery through $4,103, followed by $4,123, would reduce the immediate downside pressure.

Bitcoin traded near $82,723, down approximately 1.55% from the $84,024 reference, after an observed low near $82,563. It remains weak but has not materially broken the low recorded in the earlier update.

Trading scenarios for the rest of the session

1. Breakdown continues

This scenario strengthens if Nikkei remains below 63,000, KOSPI closes below 5,493, Hang Seng breaks 22,897 and Nasdaq futures move through 29,500 towards 29,392. Brent above $111.97 would add a second pressure channel through energy and inflation expectations.

Invalidation: Nikkei above 63,208, KOSPI above 5,553, Hang Seng above 23,000 and Nasdaq futures back above 29,583.

2. Failed break and afternoon recovery

The sell-off may be exhausting if Nikkei quickly reclaims 63,000–63,208, KOSPI holds 5,493, Hang Seng returns above 23,000 and Nasdaq futures recover 29,583. A gold recovery above $4,103 would add evidence that cross-asset liquidation is easing.

Invalidation: renewed lows in at least three of the four equity benchmarks, especially if chip leaders remain near their session lows.

3. Equity weakness with persistent oil strength

Brent above $111.97 while Nasdaq futures remain below 29,583 would keep the difficult combination of valuation pressure and rising energy costs in place. If Brent falls below $110.59, the oil side of this scenario weakens even if equities remain soft.

The Money Man View

The afternoon move has confirmed more than simple follow-through. Nikkei below 63,000, Hang Seng's fresh low and Nasdaq futures near 29,500 show that buyers have not yet defended the levels highlighted at midday. Gold below $4,100 also shows that the risk reduction is not producing a straightforward safe-haven rotation.

KOSPI is the important exception. It is deeply lower, but 5,493 has not yet broken. That makes the Asian closes more useful than trying to infer a full daily trend from live lows. A close below support would confirm another leg lower; a late recovery could leave several false breaks across the region.

For daily-timeframe traders, waiting for closing confirmation and a retest can improve execution. For intraday traders, the nearest decision points are Nikkei 63,000, Hang Seng 23,000, Nasdaq futures 29,583 and Brent $111.97. Selling directly into an extended low offers poor asymmetry unless the position size allows for a sharp rebound.

What to monitor next

  • Whether Nikkei closes below 63,000 or recovers 63,208.
  • KOSPI 5,493 and the final performance of SK Hynix and Samsung.
  • Hang Seng's ability to recover 23,000 after its fresh afternoon low.
  • Nasdaq futures at 29,500, followed by 29,392.
  • Brent at $111.97 and WTI near $100.
  • Gold around $4,082–$4,075 and Bitcoin near $82,560.
